Werewolf Surf Party

ISSUE #341

Start digging around in Halloween music and before long you’ll turn a weird corner: there’s a lot of surf guitar.

Why? In the 1950s, when the B-movie was thriving, the first teenagers were born. With post-war wealth and automobiles, they tried to find places to make out—like the movies, which played double features. The “B” movie would typically be a horror flick or a beach party. The two blended and mutated in cultural memory.

That strange kitsch has fueled everything from Friday the 13th to Rocky Horror. This band, Messer Chups, has distilled it to its purest form. It’s one of my favorite types of Halloween. You know it when you hear it. Clean tremolo, light reverb, then sample of a wolf?

That’s Scooby Doo, baby. That’s pumpkin gold.
